Experiencing Bali Beyond The Tourist Trail

The photographs that draw most travellers to Bali represent a very small part of the island. Drive half an hour in almost any direction and the pace changes entirely.
Villages around Ubud still work to the rhythm of the temple calendar. Ceremony days fill the roads with offerings and colour, and visitors who arrive respectfully — dressed modestly, quietly, without stepping into the middle of things — are usually welcomed warmly.
Seek out the family workshops: woodcarvers, silversmiths, weavers. Many will let you sit and watch, and some will teach. Paying fairly and directly for that time is one of the simplest forms of conscious travel.
Travel beyond the trail is not about finding somewhere undiscovered. It is about meeting a place on its own terms.
